The incidence rate of breast cancer is 17% lower in African American women in comparison to White women; however, the mortality rate is 34% higher. Screening for breast cancer among African American women is underutilized, yet breast cancer screening can significantly reduce morbidity and mortality numbers of African American women. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experiences of African American women with mammography screening and to gain an understanding about their motivators for and/or barriers to seeking mammography. Methods: A qualitative research design following van Manen\u2019s hermeneutic phenomenological tradition was used to explore the lived experiences of 13 purposively selected African American women with mammography screening. Face-to- face interviews, demographic data, and six open-ended questions were used for data collection. Data analysis was conducted using verbatim transcription and content coding. Results: Five themes were identified: (a) fear of fear, (b) avoiding, (c) unknowing, (d) discriminating, and (e) communicating. Thematic poems describing the participants\u2019 experiences were constructed from the interviews. Persily and Hildebrandt\u2019s (1996) middle range theory of Community Empowerment was identified as a framework for research to develop interventions to promote increased mammography screening among African American women. Conclusions: The utilization of community partners and lay workers in research interventions may help to increase participation in mammography screening." ] } }, { "label": { "en": [ "Classification" ] }, "value": { "none": [ "RC280.B8 R36 2009" ] } }, { "label": { "en": [ "Publication Date" ] }, "value": { "none": [ "2009" ] } }, { "label": { "en": [ "Genre" ] }, "value": { "none": [ "Academic theses" ] } }, { "label": { "en": [ "Holding Location" ] }, "value": { "none": [ "Barry University Archives and Special Collections" ] } }, { "label": { "en": [ "Resource Identifier" ] }, "value": { "none": [ "RC280.B8 R36 2009_RandallGwendolynn" ] } }, { "label": { "en": [ "Language" ] }, "value": { "none": [ "English" ] } }, { "label": { "en": [ "Permanent Link" ] }, "value": { "none": [ "http://sobekcmsrv.barrynet.barry.edu/AA00001776/00001" ] } }, { "label": { "en": [ "Creator" ] }, "value": { "none": [ "Randall, Gwendolynn Delores Johnson" ] } }, { "label": { "en": [ "Note" ] }, "value": { "none": [ "Thesis (Ph.D.)--Barry University, 2009.", "Includes bibliographical references (leaves 150-178)." ] } }, { "label": { "en": [ "Physical Description" ] }, "value": { "none": [ "xii, 207 leaves : ill,. charts ; 28 cm" ] } }, { "label": { "en": [ "Publisher" ] }, "value": { "none": [ "Barry University" ] } }, { "label": { "en": [ "Place of Publication" ] }, "value": { "none": [ "Miami, Fla." ] } }, { "label": { "en": [ "Type" ] }, "value": { "none": [ "Book" ] } }, { "label": { "en": [ "Rights Management" ] }, "value": { "none": [ "Copyright Gwendolynn D.
