The American Association for Retired Persons (AARP) looked at the estimated economic value of the family caregiver in 2011 and estimated it to be $450 billion (AARP, 2008). Informal caregivers often provide care to individuals with complex healthcare needs; however, they may not have the necessary knowledge and skill sets to provide safe and effective care. Informal caregivers must now learn how to become competent and safe volunteer workers who can better protect their loved ones from harm, all while managing their new role. Purpose: The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the role of the informal caregiver and identify factors that influence his or her attitudes, perceptions, and behaviors in providing effective, efficient, quality care in the home. Theoretical Framework: A grounded theory method, which is based on the philosophical underpinnings of symbolic interactionism and pragmatism, was utilized to guide this study. Method: Semi-structured interviews and a focus group were conducted to collect data from informal caregivers who lived in Miami Dade County. Data segments obtained from the interviews were coded, categorized, and analyzed for conceptual relationships. Theoretical sampling and a focus group interview were used to validate the concepts, themes, and categories that were identified during the individual interviews. Conceptual relationships were developed into a substantive level theory that explained a behavior and the interactive process that occurs within a caregiver when providing care in the home to their loved one.
