A total of 386 participants completed three self-report questionnaires assessing depression, rumination, and gender roles. It was found that depression and rumination are strongly associated. In addition, rumination rates were higher in women, supporting a gender-specific cognitive risk. Depression rates were equal for both genders. Rumination did not differ as a function of gender roles. The associations between gender roles and depression were complex, with femininity emerging as a protective factor, and androgynous individuals having lower depression rates than undifferentiated ones. Theoretical implications regarding the change of gender role constructs and their outcomes in current societal context are emphasized.
