This investigation involved existential phenomenological interviewing of 19 professional musicians ranging in age from 22 to 62 to determine the meaning of the experience of flow in professional musicians. Each professional musician had experienced flow with an average practice time of at least one hour per day. Qualitative analysis of the transcripts revealed a total of 1,393 meaning units that were further grouped into themes and subthemes. A final thematic structure revealed that there were six major themes: Connection, Energy, Autopilot, In the Moment, Intoxication, and Emotions. The results offer a number of insights for sport/performance psychology researchers and practical implications for musicians, trainers, and sport/performance psychology consultants.
