However, a scarcity of literature has examined the predictive utility of discrepant communication between parents and adolescents on alcohol risk behaviors. Even fewer studies have explored these differences in samples of Hispanics of diverse national origin in different regions of the United States. Consequently, the present study assessed the longitudinal relationship between discrepancies in parent-adolescent open and problem communication and involvement in alcohol risk behaviors using data from a multi-site study conducted in Miami and Los Angeles. The sample of the current study consisted of 302 recently immigrated Hispanic adolescents and their parents. Open family communication and problems in family communication were measured using the Parent-Adolescent Communication Scale, and discrepancy scores were computed by subtracting the parent reports from the adolescents. A Zero-Inflated Poisson model was employed to examine the relationship between communication discrepancy scores and adolescents\u2019 involvement in frequency of alcohol use, binge drinking, drunkenness, and unprotected sex. The results revealed that adolescents\u2019 perception of mother-adolescent communication differentially predicted alcohol risk behaviors from their perception of father-adolescent communication. These findings are meaningful for intervention efforts that aim at promoting parent-adolescent communication in recently immigrated Hispanic families." ] } }, { "label": { "en": [ "Classification" ] }, "value": { "none": [ "HV5199.5 .S45 2015" ] } }, { "label": { "en": [ "Publication Date" ] }, "value": { "none": [ "2015" ] } }, { "label": { "en": [ "Genre" ] }, "value": { "none": [ "Academic theses" ] } }, { "label": { "en": [ "Holding Location" ] }, "value": { "none": [ "Barry University Archives and Special Collections" ] } }, { "label": { "en": [ "Resource Identifier" ] }, "value": { "none": [ "HV5199.5 .S45 2015_ShiMolin" ] } }, { "label": { "en": [ "Language" ] }, "value": { "none": [ "English" ] } }, { "label": { "en": [ "Permanent Link" ] }, "value": { "none": [ "http://sobekcmsrv.barrynet.barry.edu/AA00001304/00001" ] } }, { "label": { "en": [ "Creator" ] }, "value": { "none": [ "Shi, Molin" ] } }, { "label": { "en": [ "Note" ] }, "value": { "none": [ "Thesis (M.S.)--Barry University, 2015.", "Includes bibliographical references (leaves 55-67)." ] } }, { "label": { "en": [ "Physical Description" ] }, "value": { "none": [ "73 leaves ; 28 cm" ] } }, { "label": { "en": [ "Publisher" ] }, "value": { "none": [ "Barry University" ] } }, { "label": { "en": [ "Place of Publication" ] }, "value": { "none": [ "Miami, Fla." ] } }, { "label": { "en": [ "Type" ] }, "value": { "none": [ "Book" ] } }, { "label": { "en": [ "Rights Management" ] }, "value": { "none": [ "Copyright Molin Shi.
